The 9 Gamut Procedure

Despite very little data for this specific technique popularized by Gary Craig, founder of EFT, there is research that shows that our eye movements are directly connected to how we process or repress stress and trauma.

For example, according to Dr. Stephen Porges, when our Sympathetic Nervous System signals a threat, the body’s response causes the muscles around the eyes to become flat and lose tone. Moving the eyes as described here may be restoring that tone which then sends the message to the brain that the environment is safe and the threat response can subside.

Additionally, stress causes our pupils to dilate and our peripheral vision is reduced. Actively restoring peripheral vision reverses this stress response.

The theory behind the actions of counting, humming, and switching eyes from left to right is that they stimulate both hemispheres of the brain in a supportive way.

As is often the case, the conscious enactment of calming physical behaviors sends our body the message that we are safe, reversing the effects of stress.

Some practitioners of EFT will incorporate this technique into their tapping practice which is described later in this guide. On its own, the 9 Gamut Procedure has demonstrated positive results in response to stress without the requirement of making statements.

The 9 Gamut point is located in the furrow between the bones of ring and pinky fingers, approximately 1 inch from the web of the fingers.

In TCM, it’s called the Triple Warmer 3 (TW3) and it calms the nervous system, eases anxiety, promotes relaxation and sleep, and soothes the fight/flight response.

Here are the steps for the technique called The 9 Gamut Procedure:

  • Sit comfortably
  • Locate the Triple Warmer 3 acupressure point (see the diagram)
  • Breathe naturally
  • Begin tapping gently on this point and continue throughout the procedure
  • Now, look up and find a spot directly in front of you; this is your center point
  • Look straight ahead and then, close your eyes
  • Now, open your eyes
  • From the center point in front of you and without moving your head, look down to the right
  • Return your eyes to the center point in front of you
  • From the center point in front of you and without moving your head, look down to the left
  • Return your eyes to the center point in front of you
  • Imagine a compass face surrounding the center point
  • Start at the north and smoothly move your eyes from north to northeast to east
  • Continue on to southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest, and finally back to the north
  • Continuing to breathe naturally, reverse the direction with your eyes
  • Once you have completed tracing this circle with your eyes in both directions, allow your eyes to return to your center point
  • Hum a couple of bars of a tune like Somewhere Over The Rainbow
  • Now, count 1-2-3-4-5 out loud
  • And, finally, hum those couple of bars of the tune again

In this video, EFT Universe founder, Dawson Church, demonstrates the 9 Gamut Procedure and shares his experience with research published in Traumatology.
